Grace Coddington

Pamela Rosalind Grace Coddington was born in20 April 1941.Grace Coddington is a former Welsh model and former creative director of American Vogue magazine. Coddington is known for creating large, complex, and dramatic photo shoots. A page in the Guardian newspaper wrote that it “produced some of the most memorable fashion images. Their images may be playful and degenerate or capricious and mysterious.”

In 1959 at the age of 18, there was a Vogue Model contest, and someone submitted her photos. She ended up winning the youth model section and appeared in the October issue in a photo taken by Norman Parkinson. Then she began her career as a model at Vogue.

At the age of 26, she was involved in a car accident that left her with head injuries and an eyelid removed, which was later reconstructed through plastic surgery.

In the third season of the anthology series American Horror Story, American actress Francis Conroy interprets the famous Myrtle Snow. The character’s red hair, as well as her passion for fashion, is considered a tribute to former model Grace Coddington.

Coddington married in 1968 to Michael Chao, a restaurateur. They divorced a year later. She later married photographer Willie Christie. They divorced in 1980. 

She raised her nephew Tristan from the age of eight, after the death of her sister Rosemary.

In 1986, she moved to New York City to work for Calvin Klein. Since then, she has lived with her partner, hairdresser Didier Malleg, and several cats.

In 2010, she announced plans to write a memoir with her assistant Jay Fielden. The two previously worked together on a 2002 photo book, Grace: Thirty Years of Fashion at Vogue. Phaydun reissued the book in 2015.  After Feelden landed a job as an editor at Town & Country, Coddington was forced to postpone writing the book until 2011, having decided to write it with Michael Roberts. The book deal is said to have been worth US $1.2 million.

 

Her memoir, Grace, was published in November 2012. In 2015, film production company A24 selected the rights to Coddington’s diary

Coddington appeared in the public eye in 2009 with the release of The September Issue, a fly-a-wall documentary about the September 2007 issue release of Vogue. She plays a prominent role in the film because she is heavily involved in the design and production of the case. Her strained relationship with editor Anna Wintour was also highlighted.
